Episode 45: Sunday
If you only have time for 5 songs…
Sunday - Kwaku Asante [#4 - 12:08]
Let me start by saying that I truly underestimated Kwaku. I started his honeycomb EP and when I got to Sunday, I had forgotten what came before. Nothing else mattered after the Londoner crooned, “let’s break bread, then I’ll break your back”. Game. Over. Sir, what? Yes. I’ll gladly go to church everyday of the week, multiple times a day. Aside from the lyrics, the instrumentation in this song completes the picture and brings a smooth and nostalgic 90s neo-soul vibe to this decade.
Other honorable mentions from honeycomb include: Molasses, Smoke & Mirrors
Say It - Elaine [#6 - 19:53]
When I first heard this song, I swore it was H.E.R. but alas, it was not...her. This song is a great embodiment of the trap-soul / contemporary R&B wave that I’m still riding. Plus a little fun fact about the South African artist - she’s also a full-time law student and under 21. Talk about inspo.
More noteworthy songs from Elements (which overall solidly illustrates all the emotions and thoughts that arise when a relationship is coming to an end): I/You, Changes
Higher - ((( O ))) [#13 - 41:49]
I love ethereal, lo-fi R&B and ((( O ))) (aka The Sundrop Garden fka June Marieezy) does it oh so beautifully. Her voice is both hypnotic and enchanting and I could listen to this song (and others from the album) on repeat.
Other songs you may enjoy from ((( 1 ))): All of them, go listen to the full project
Salt - Sophie Faith [#18 - 1:03:23]
When that bassline drops about a minute in, it was game over for me. Sophie’s emotional vocals are enough to carry the song but those in combination with the instruments had me grooving and looking for someone to be mad at the same time.
Also, what is in the water in London? The majority of R&B / Soul that I stumble upon is coming from London town. I’m here for that takeover…
Toronto - Snoh Aalegra - [#34 - 2:02:58]
Snoh. Aalegra. Must I say more? And if you don’t know, please press play.
